Glossary Terms ....... Q
Q-Angle: This is the common angle of quadriceps relative to the patella. Ten (10) degrees the normal angle for males.
Quadriceps: In Exercise Glossary language, this is the muscles on the front side of the thigh that extend the knee. Strengthening these muscles is an important part of Golf Exercises.
Quality Training: This term refers to the training just prior to bodybuilding competition, where intervals between sets are significantly reduced to enhance muscle mass and density. A low calorie diet is generally followed to reduce body fat.

R.I.C.E: This is the formula for treating injuries such as muscle pulls, tendon problems and sprains. The abbreviation stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.
Radial Pulse: This is the heartbeat or pulse felt at the wrist.

Range of Motion: An exercise terminology term referring to the total distance you can move around a particular joint.
Raynaud's Phenomenon: This phenomenon refers to changes in skin color due to spasm of small blood vessels, particularly with exposure to colder temperatures.
Reciprocal Inhibition Reflex: A term referring to the relaxation in a muscle while being stretched.
Reconstruction: This term refers to surgical rebuilding of a bone joint utilizing artificial, transplanted, or natural materials.
Recovery Index: This index is the summation of three thirty-second heart-rate recovery counts after performing a step test.
Recumbent Bike: This type of bicycle works the hamstring and buttock muscles while supporting the back. It can be an outdoor or indoor style bike, a stationary-type or a moving bike.
Referred Pain: This type of pain is felt in an unaffected area of the body away from the actual injury.
Relative Body Fat: Better known as the percent of body fat, or the proportion of fat tissue in the body.
Rep Out: This Golf Terminology term means to repeat the identical exercise movement (such as weight lifting) several times until one is unable to perform anymore repetitions.
Repetition maximum (RM): This term refers to the greatest weight which can be lifted with proper technique for a specified number of repetitions.
Repetition Or "Rep": Considering that a certain number of "reps" equals one set, a single movement such as in performing one squat moving up and back down would be considered one rep. This term is commonly used in weight lifting or resistance exercises.

Resisted Sprinting: This method is used to increase speed-strength and stride length by increasing the ground force production during the support phase.
Resting Heart Rate (RHR): In Exercise Glossary language, this measure is known as the heart rate associated with a resting metabolic rate.
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR): This is a measure of calories required in maintaining a normal metabolism.
Rotational Work: This is the product of the physical force exerted on an object and the total distance the object rotates.
Rotator Cuff: The muscles affected are the supraspinatus (most commonly injured), teres minor, infraspinatus, and the subscapularis. These are the four muscles in the shoulder area that can be severely irritated by overuse.
Routine: This term is a defined schedule of exercises, either strength or weight training, including aerobic exercise.

Sacroiliac: This is the junction of the sacrum and the hip bone.
Sagittal Plane: In Exercise Glossary language, this is the vertical plane that divides the organs and body into left and right sections.
Sarcopenia: This is a term referring to muscle loss due to aging.
SC Joint: Sternoclavicular joint; This is the articulation of the sternum with the collarbone.
Self-Determination: As opposed to trying to meet the expectations of others, self-determination is a desire to participate in an activity for self-fulfillment.
Set: This is referred to as a group of consecutively performed repetitions.
Shin Splints: This is a term used for sharp pain on the front side of the lower leg. Walking or running on a hard surface will sometimes cause this problem.
Single-Joint Exercise: In Exercise Glossary language, this is referred to as an exercise that involves movement at only one primary bone joint.
Six-Pack: A slang term referring to abdominal muscles which are extremely lean, which in turn causes the individual fibrous sections in the stomach area to be visible under the skin.
Skinfold Caliper: This is a hand-held instrument used to measure body fat content, by selecting fold of skin that has been pinched up on the body.
Slow Twitch: A slang term referring to muscle cells that contract very slowly and are resistant to fatigue. These cells are employed when endurance activities such as swimming, long-distance running, and cycling are performed.
Slow-Twitch (Type 1): This is a type of muscle fiber and motor unit which are utilized for aerobic activity.
Smith Rack: A specific type of machine used for exercises such as overhead shoulder presses, squats, and bench presses. It is also commonly called a Smith Machine, which is aa self-spotting machine that consists of a barbell moving only vertically up and down on metal runners.
Snatch: This is an Olympic weight lifting procedure where the weight is lifted from the floor to an overhead position in one continuous movement, with the arms fully extended.
Specific Warm-Up: This is a type of warm-up which involves performing movements that mimic the sport or activity involved.
Golf Stretching exercises are important to any Golf Fitness Program.
Speed-Endurance: A Golf Fitness term referring to the ability to maintain a running speed over an extended duration, usually longer than six seconds.
Speed-Strength: A term referring to the development of maximum force at high velocities.
Split Routine: This is an exercise session in which alternating muscle groups are trained on different days.
Spot: This is a term referring to standing guard while someone performs a weight lifting set. The primary function of the spotter is to prevent accidents or injury.
Stabilizer Muscle: A muscle that is responsible for stabilizing an adjacent segment.
Stack: This term refers to the 'weight stack' on lifting machines which utilize a plate/pin setup.
Static Stretch: This is a term referring to a muscle stretch that moves to the point of gentle tension, but is held steady for several seconds without bouncing or moving.
Static Stretching: A type of stretching which increases the length of a specific muscle or muscle group.
Step Aerobics: A form of aerobics that is characterized as being high intensity and low impact. This exercise involves stepping on and off of a bench which ranges in height from about five to twelve inches. This process utilizes a variety of arm and step combinations all while listening to music.
Step Test: This is a prescribed testing process for determining heart-rate recovery after performing 'Step Aerobics' for a three minute time period at a predetermined cadence.
Strength: This is known as the capacity of a muscle to exert a force against a resistance.
Sticking Point: This is a term referring to the most difficult point in an exercise, which commonly happens directly after transition from the eccentric to the concentric phase.
Straight Sets: These are groups of repetitions interrupted by brief pauses.
Strength Training: Predetermined exercises specifically designed to work muscles and make them stronger and larger. Golf Strength Exercises will enhance your ability to improve your golf game.
Stretching: Exercises which increase the ease and degree to which a muscle can reach, bend, or turn.
Stretch Reflex: A direct and immediate contraction of a muscle caused by rapid stretching of that muscle. Efficient Golf Stretching Exercises are a very important part of total Golf Fitness.
Stride Frequency: This term is referring to the number of steps per minute in running or walking.
Stride Length: This is the total distance covered with each step in a walk or run.
Structural Exercise: This is an exercise that pre-loads the trunk or vertebral column, and places direct stress on the lower back.
Super Set: This is a term known as alternating back and forth between two exercises until the specified quantity of sets is completed.
Syncope: This is a term referring to fainting or a brief loss of consciousness.
Synergistic: Two plus two equals 5! This is the action where two components produce a greater outcome than either taken by themselves could accomplish.
Systemic: This is a substance or effect capable of spreading through the entire body.
Systolic Blood Pressure: This is the pressure exerted against the arterial walls when blood is forcefully interspersed during ventricular contraction.

T Cells: These cells are white blood cells manufactured in the thymus, which protect the body from cancer causing agents, viruses, and bacteria.
Tachycardia: According to standard Exercise Glossary definitions, this is a resting heart rate in excess of more than 100 beats per minute.
Talus: This term refers to the ankle bone which articulates with the fibula and tibia to form the ankle joint.
Target Heart Rate Range (THRR): This is the heart rate range prescribed for an aerobic exercise session. This rate consists of the minimum and maximum heart rates per unit of time. The discontinued use of Golf Carts will increase the aerobic exercise during a round of golf.
Tempo: According to standard Exercise Glossary definitions, this is commonly referred to as the rate of speed during a repetition.
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ): This is the articulation of the jaw and skull, widely considered to be vital in resolution of injuries throughout the body.
Tendinitis: According to standard Exercise Glossary definitions, this is known as inflammation of the tendons.
Tennis Elbow: This is a common term designating lateral elbow pain.
Testosterone: A term referring to the principle male hormone which accelerates stimulates blood flow and tissue growth.
Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC): This term is known as a lifestyle modification that includes diet, weight loss, and physical activity.
Thermotherapy: According to standard Exercise Glossary definitions, this is a process by where the use of heat or thermal induction is used to treat a disorder or disease.
Tibia: A term that refers to the weight-bearing bone of the shin, which is the larger of the two bones of the lower leg.
Time Dependant Aging: This term is known as the loss of function within the body as aging occurs.
Timed Repeats: According to standard Exercise Glossary definitions, this is the repeated sessions of alternating walking and running, utilizing time as the determinant of the effort involved.
Tocopherols: These are compounds obtained through vacuum distillation of edible vegetable oils. They are compounds that make vitamin E, which are comprised of alpha, beta, delta, episilon, eta, gamma, and zeta substances.
Total Peripheral Resistance: This term is known as the impedance of blood flow caused by nervous stimulation, exercise, metabolism, and environmental stress.
Toxicity: This is the condition or quality of being harmful, poisonous and destructive.
Trachea: According to standard Exercise Glossary definitions, this is commonly known as the windpipe.
Training Heart Rate: The heartbeat rate (pulse) per minute while exercising which produces cardiorespiratory benefits.
Transverse Plane: This is the horizontal plane which is used as a divisor the body or organs into upper and lower portions.
Traps: This is the largest muscle of the back and neck that draws the head backwards and rotates the scapula. "Traps" is the abbreviation for the 'trapezius muscles'.
Triathlon: A competitive event involving three (3) endurance activities like running, swimming, and cycling.
Triceps: This term refers to the muscles on the back of the upper arm which straighten the elbows and allow pushing of the arms in a forward direction.
Tri Sets: According to standard Exercise Glossary definitions, this is procedure that alternates back and forth between three (3) exercises until a specified quantity of sets are completed.
Triglycerides: The major storage form of fat, which is a group of fatty compounds which circulate in the bloodstream.

Ulna: According to standard Exercise Glossary definitions, this is the forearm bone that runs from the tip of the elbow to the little finger side of the wrist.
Ultrasonography: This is known as the process by which the reflection of high-frequency sound waves is used to develop images of a structure within the body.
Underhand Grip: Commonly known as a reverse grip, which is the opposite of an overhand grip.
Understriding: This type of gait while walking or running tends to cause wasted energy. It is a gait in which the foot takes too short a stride.
Undulating: A type of periodized training program which involves microcycle vacillations or within-the-week training load and volume.
Universal Machine: Weight lifting machines where the accompanying weights are on tracks, which are then lifted via levers.
Upper Abs: This is an abbreviation for the abdominal muscles located above the navel.
Uric Acid: This is a by-product of purine metabolism, which is prevalent in the development of gout.

Valerian: This is a wonderful herb which is known to be quieting to the nervous system, and assists in relieving insomnia along with improving circulation.
Valgus: A term meaning the angulation outward and away from the midline of the body.
Valsalva Maneuver: A term referring to the act of breath-holding which is a contributing factor to maintaining intra-abdominal pressure.
Variable Resistance: A type of strength training equipment whereby it varies the amount of weight being lifted to match a strength curve for a particular tension exercise.
Varus: A term that refers to the angulation inward and toward the midline of the body.
Vascularity: This is a condition whereby there is an increase in size and number of observable veins.
Vastus Intermedius, Lateralis And Medialis: These are three of the four muscles in the thigh that make up the quadriceps.
Venous Return: This term refers to the return of blood from the lower body to the right atrium of the heart.
V-Grip: These grips are a "V-shaped" type of cable attachment utilized primarily for triceps pushdowns.
Vital Signs: Specifically, these are the medical indications of respiration, heart rate and body temperature.
Vitamins: These compounds are the organic nutrients in very small amounts, which are essential for good health in the body.
Vo2 Max: This figure is a measure of good physical fitness. It is the largest volume of oxygen your body can take in and assimilate.
Volume: A term which refers to the total amount of weight lifted, or the total quantity of repetitions completed in a training session.

Waist To Hip Ratio (Whr): This designation is the ratio of the waist circumference (measured at the umbilicus), to the hip circumference (measured at the point where the hips are their widest).
Warm-Up: This is known as that part of an exercise session which prepares the body for a more vigorous exercise. Usually walking, stretching of major muscle groups, and exercises that stimulate the heart, lungs and muscles in a more moderate fashion are done during the warm-up period.
Weight: Commonly known as the number of pounds used during a lifting session. It is also considered the amount of resistance against which a muscle is asked to work.
Weight Bearing Exercise: This is an exercise in which weights are lifted, or you support your own weight.
Weight Training: Weight training builds muscle and reshapes the body. This is also a form of exercise in which muscles are repeatedly contracted against a weight to reach a state of fatigue.
Weight Training Belt: A thick leather belt used to support the back while performing military presses, squats, and dead lifts in a lifting session of weight training.
Weight-Bearing Exercise: This is known as an activity which requires the skeleton of the body to bear the weight of your body.
Working Sets: These are the sets following the warm-up sets that are part of a training routine.
Workout:Exercise Terms referring to a planned session of exercises.
Work-to-Rest Ratio: A term known as the relationship between duration of the exercise interval and that of the recovery interval.
